Study on the Process Conditions of Preparation of Hexagonal Flake Magnesium Hydroxide from Hydromagnesite

Hydromagnesite (4MgCO_3·Mg(OH)_2·4H_2O) is a natural alkaline carbonate mineral with abundant reserves, which is pure in texture, white in color and low in impurity content. High-quality mineral raw materials for magnesium products such as heavy basic magnesium carbonate and nano-magnesium hydroxide.

However, due to factors such as geography, transportation, and technology, its development and utilization are limited, and there are few related researches in China. Therefore, how to develop and utilize hydromagnesite to prepare a series of high-quality magnesium compounds is the main research and development work at present. Tibet Mag is committed to using hydromagnesite as a raw material to develop environmentally friendly, low-cost, and suitable methods for industrial production of high-quality magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate, and magnesium hydroxide, and to explore its application in various fields.

Tibet Mag used hydromagnesite as raw material to prepare highly dispersed hexagonal flake-shaped flame-retardant nano-magnesium hydroxide through a simple synthesis route of “calcination-hydration-calcination-hydrothermal”. After determining the preliminary process , explored the effect of the amount of magnesium oxide, hydrothermal temperature and hydrothermal time on the crystallinity and morphology of magnesium hydroxide, and determined the optimal process hydrothermal conditions: the amount of magnesium oxide was 10%-25% (mass fraction), hydrothermal Temperature is 150 ℃, hydrothermal time is 3h. During the hydrothermal process, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG6000) and polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) were added to the reaction system, respectively. , the effects of different modifiers and modifier dosages on the crystallinity and dispersibility of magnesium hydroxide particles were investigated.

The results show that under the condition of 4% (mass fraction) PVP, the dispersibility of nano-magnesium hydroxide can be well improved, and a nano-magnesium hydroxide with good dispersibility, complete crystal form, uniform particle size, diameter of 300–400nm, and thickness of 40 nm can be obtained. ~60nm hexagonal flake nano-magnesium hydroxide.
